The ABCs of A B Corp
How Emdash redefines success in business by putting people and the planet first.
Companies make all sorts of choices – from the font for their website to the products they manufacture or sell. We believe some of the most important choices are around the values that inform the work they do.
We work in the “for good” space. We partner with charities, grassroots organizations, NGOs and even governments all trying to make the world a better place, so who we are needs to match the communities we serve.
One of the ways we show our commitment to those values at Emdash is by being a B Corp.
What even is a B Corp?
7,800 B Corps operate across 92 countries and 161 industries. Being part of this community means believing in a global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet.
Once a B Corp, Always a B Corp?
Every three years, each B Corp undertakes a recertification process where we illustrate how we are actually practicing our commitment to those values in our day-to-day as a business.
Through the process, we review our social and environmental impacts, our policies and practices, our finances, and structure. We identify what we pay our staff, how we operate, and who we serve.
This year, our work to codify our practices and roll out a diversity, equity, and inclusion process paid off with our highest score yet — 107.5. The minimum score to quality is 80 and according to B Corp the average ordinary company would score 50.9.
We may be a B Corp but that's an A+ in our hearts.

B Corp Isn’t Everything
The B Corp process isn’t perfect, but we’ve been there since 2015, back when there were only 150 B Corps in Canada. Today, there are over 600.
Of course, we’ve had conversations over the years about our place in the community as large companies with complicated legacies like Nespresso have joined in. And we know that the certification isn’t a badge of perfection; it’s a commitment to improving our impacts on people and the environment.
Ultimately, we see it as a way to share with our clients, partners, and every one we interact with what our values are – and that they guide the work we do.
Being a B Corp is a way for us to say being for-profit doesn’t stop us from being “for good”. We are proud to say we’ve passed our third recertification process and that we are a part of the B Corp community for the next three years.
